A day spent on a bike is a day well spent.

Helen Keller famously said that “nature has the power to renew and refresh our minds, our bodies, and our spirits,” and I couldn’t agree more. One of my favorite things about Boston is the wide range of green spaces we all have, right outside our doors.

I am fortunate to live across from the Public Garden, the first public botanical garden in the U.S., and I enjoy its changing scenery. But my love for biking inspires me to explore places further afield.

I’m a lifelong cyclist, and riding is still a magical experience. One of my favorite Sunday rides is down Commonwealth Avenue (great shade and a safe bike lane!) to one of Boston’s hidden gems: The Fenway Victory Gardens. With over 500 gardens and over 7.5 acres, this space is a real oasis. It’s also one of two remaining World War II Victory Gardens in the U.S.

Walking down the dirt pathways and peering into these incredible fenced gardens is fascinating. Each one is different and a reflection of the current caretaker. Some are ordered, some are a beautiful chaos. No matter the season, I always find something special here.

After this immersion in nature, I head next door to the Museum of Fine Arts to get lunch in the New American Café. With its huge, light-filled space and imposing lime-green glass Chihuly sculpture, I feel like I’m still outside.

Boston has over 100 miles of bike paths and 4,797 acres of public parkland and open space. My hope is everyone can find a place that helps them renew and refresh their mind, body, and spirit!
